A little more about me...

I’m a transplanted New Yorker who has lived in Europe since I finished my degree in 1994. Since then my short-term homes have been Prague in Czechia, Copenhagen in Denmark, Bern in Switzerland and since 2006 Blagoevgrad in Bulgaria.

My camera gear is a Nikon Z7 mirrorless that I’ve owned for about 5 years. Earlier digital cameras were the Nikon D750 and D7000. In the distant past I used a Minolta analog camera.

Lenses are important in choosing how to frame a shot and how much light they allow through to the sensor. Since their lifetime may exceed that of the camera’s they’re important; my collection has grown gradually. My favorite now is a 400 mm prime F4.5 Nikkor which is amazingly light for such a focal distance. What remains attached to the camera most of the time however is the Nikkor 24-120 F4 which is so flexible.

I admit to spending a lot of time editing and cropping my photos and in doing so I use Lightroom and find it is terrific because it constantly updates with new useful features. It allows you to easily darken only the sky or cut haziness, for example.

I love getting out in the nature especially at dawn. It is the most peaceful time of the day. Getting a good shot with the moon or sun is easier with a phone app called photopills. It gives timing and location of the moon and sun in its maps and stores plans and places for future reference. I recommend it highly.

Most of the time I am in my office at the American University in Bulgaria where I teach macroeconomics and financial markets.
